How to get clients for a marketing agency in 2026
2026-10-23 · updated 2026-10-23 · 12 min read · Adam Axelsson, founder of Revexa
To get clients for a marketing agency in 2026, choose one niche, then contact companies in the weeks their marketing changes owner or changes gear: a new CMO, a marketing role that will not fill, a funding round, a first ad campaign, a launch, a new market or a public tender. Agency people name change on the client's side more often than weak results when clients leave: in a survey of 494 agency professionals run from February to April 2026 by AgencyAnalytics, which sells reporting software to agencies, 42 percent named budget cuts and 37 percent client-side internal changes, against 32 percent for lack of perceived value and 31 percent for performance (AgencyAnalytics, undated report page). The changes that cost you a client are the same ones that open a door somewhere else.
For owners of B2B marketing and digital agencies with 2 to 30 people. Checked on 23 October 2026. The general method is in how to get clients, channel costs in client acquisition strategies. Revexa builds Leo, which covers some of the signals on this page.
Retainer economics: what one agency client is worth
A marketing agency sells a monthly retainer, so a client is worth years of fees, and growth depends on how fast you replace the ones who leave. The same AgencyAnalytics survey found:
- Average client lifetime: two to five years at 43 percent of agencies, more than five years at 19 percent, and under a year at 14 percent (12 plus 2, our sum).
- Growth from inside: 56 percent of the agency owners and leaders asked (206 answers) said more than 40 percent of their new revenue comes from existing clients.
AgencyAnalytics sells reporting software, 64 percent of respondents were in the US and the report page carries no publication date: one vendor's survey, not a census.
Fictional example: an agency with 12 retainers at $5,000 a month and an average client stay of three years loses about four clients a year (12 ÷ 3). If one in four qualified first meetings becomes a client (our assumption), it needs 16 such meetings a year just to stay level and 28 to add three clients. Each client kept three years is worth $180,000 in fees (our arithmetic). How to estimate your own figure: lifetime value in B2B.
So when one of your own clients gets a new marketing leader, meet that person in their first month with your results, before any agency review begins.
Pick a niche your signals can see
Choose a niche by buyer and situation, not by service, because a niche is only useful if the signals below can find companies in it every week. "LinkedIn ads for B2B" describes a service. "Pipeline from LinkedIn ads for cybersecurity vendors between Series A and C" describes a buyer you can list, watch and write to.
Our rules of thumb, not a study: narrow enough that you can name the few hundred companies in it, wide enough that a handful show a signal every week, and one case study per niche, with numbers the client approved.
Fictional example: an eight-person agency renames its offer from "B2B marketing" to "demand generation for HR software", lists 340 HR software companies in the US and UK, and writes only to those showing a signal below.
Seven signals that a company needs a marketing agency now
A company needs outside marketing help when it has a new target and not yet the people to hit it. Ordered by how directly the signal leads to an agency decision, in our assessment. Every example in the table is fictional.
| Signal | Why it opens a door for an agency | Free place to check | Fictional example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. New CMO or head of marketing | A new budget owner reviews inherited agencies | LinkedIn job-change posts, appointment releases, team pages | A fintech hires its CMO from a larger rival in May |
| 2. Marketing roles open for months | Budget exists for work nobody is doing | Posting dates and reposts on career pages | A demand generation manager ad, reposted three times since March |
| 3. Funding round | New growth targets that need pipeline | Funding news; our guide to recently funded startups | A Series B data platform announces plans to double its sales team |
| 4. Started advertising | It is learning paid media with its own money | Meta Ad Library, Google Ads Transparency Center, LinkedIn Ad Library | A procurement software firm runs its first LinkedIn ads this month |
| 5. Product launch | A launch needs a campaign before the team exists | Press pages, product changelogs, Product Hunt | An analytics company announces a second product for January |
| 6. New market | New language, new channels, no local brand | Job ads for a country manager or local sellers | A Dutch HR platform hires its first two account executives in London |
| 7. Public tenders and agency pitches | The buyer has written the brief | Tender portals filtered by marketing codes; trade press | A university tenders a two-year digital marketing contract |
The new CMO: why the first months matter
In our assessment a new marketing leader is the clearest agency trigger, because the budget, the plan and the agency roster all pass to one person. In Spencer Stuart's study "CMO Tenure 2026", covering the 346 named CMOs at S&P 500 companies (as of 30 June 2025), average tenure was 4.1 years against 5.0 for the C-suite as a whole, and 38 percent were hired from outside (Spencer Stuart). Those are the largest US companies; we know of no equivalent study for the smaller firms most B2B agencies serve.
On timing, the line agencies quote comes from Winmo, a company that sells new-business data to agencies, in its CMO tenure report from 2017, built on CMOs at large US advertisers in consumer-facing industries: "After a new CMO is named, a review of agencies of record is commonly undertaken in the first six months" (Winmo, 2017). The page shows no figure behind that sentence and we found no newer independent study, so read it as one vendor's observation from 2017, not a rule. Our advice: write between week two and week eight, about their announced plan, and offer something small, such as a review of inherited channels.
Ad libraries: who just started spending
The three big ad libraries are free to search and help you spot companies that just started advertising, though what they keep differs by country.
- Meta: "Anyone can view and search the Ad Library", which shows all active ads across Meta technologies in every country. Once an ordinary ad stops, it stays only if it reached the EU or the UK (for one year) or is about social issues, elections or politics (for seven years) (Meta).
- Google: the Ads Transparency Center holds ads from all advertisers on Google platforms such as Search, Display, Gmail and YouTube, searchable by advertiser or website name and filtered by date and targeted location (Google).
- LinkedIn: the Ad Library holds ads that ran after 1 June 2023, for one year after their last impression, searchable by advertiser, keyword, country and date; impressions, targeting and the dates an ad ran are shown only for ads targeted to the EU (LinkedIn).
Look for first ads, a sudden jump in volume, or ads that all send traffic to the homepage. Fictional example: "Saw your first LinkedIn campaign went live this month. All four ads point to the homepage, not the demo page. Want a one-page note on splitting them by persona?"
Tenders and agency pitches
Public buyers publish marketing briefs, and filtering by the right codes cuts the noise. European and UK notices use CPV codes; the UK's market engagement notice for the RM6364 Media and Creative framework, which replaces RM6123 and RM6125, lists 79340000 (advertising and marketing services), and its first version in April 2025 also listed 79341000 (advertising services) (Find a Tender). In the US, NAICS 541810 covers advertising agencies (US Census Bureau). Frameworks that size suit large agencies; a small agency does better with universities and councils tendering one campaign (our assessment). Free portals: where to find clients.
Trade press tracks private pitches, mostly for big brands; Ad Age's Agency Review Tracker, launched in June 2024, is "exclusive to All Access subscribers" (Ad Age).
Channels ranked by cost per won client
Referrals and current clients cost the least per won client and paid ads the most, in our assessment for a 2 to 30 person agency; partner requirements were checked on 23 October 2026.
| Rank | Channel | Cash cost | What makes it work for an agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Referrals and current clients | $0 | Ask right after a reported win |
| 2 | Partner programs | Time to meet the tier rules | A listing where buyers of the platform look for help |
| 3 | Case studies per niche | Your time | One case in the buyer's language |
| 4 | Content | Your time, for months | Answers to what your niche asks before hiring |
| 5 | Events | Tickets and travel | Speaking at one niche event |
| 6 | Directories | Free profiles; paid placement | Reviews from clients in your niche |
| 7 | Paid ads | Your ad budget | A packaged offer with a price, such as a paid media audit |
Partner programs, checked today. HubSpot ranks Solutions Partners in four tiers by points; for Gold, the lowest, a partner must reach 115 sourced and 345 total points by 15 January 2027, and earns 5 sourced points per $100 of sourced monthly recurring revenue (10 in growth markets). HubSpot's own table puts the sourced minimum for Gold at $2,300 of sourced monthly revenue from customers outside growth markets ($1,150 inside them); the rest of the 345 can also come from assisted and managed points (HubSpot). Buyers find partners in HubSpot's Solutions Directory. Google Partner status needs an optimization score of at least 70 percent, $10,000 of ad spend across managed accounts over 90 days, and at least half of your account strategists certified; Premier Partners are the top 3 percent of participating companies in a country, set once a year (Google).
Cold outreach to cold lists is left off on purpose: a list of "VPs of Marketing at B2B companies" holds no reason to talk now, and agency buyers spot a template in one line.
Agency clients versus web design clients
A marketing agency sells a retainer that a person keeps renewing, while a web studio sells a project that an event starts, so an agency watches people and budgets and a studio watches the website. The signals overlap at funding and new marketing leaders, then split: ad libraries and launches for agencies, rebrands and page speed for web design. The web design version is how to get web design clients.
Where Leo fits for a marketing agency
Leo by Revexa is an AI GTM agent that finds the B2B companies ready to buy and starts the conversations that turn them into customers, by email and LinkedIn. By default you approve every message before it is sent.
Three of the seven signals above are on Leo's list (facts): new executives in the buying role, so a new CMO or head of marketing; hiring and job ads, so the open marketing roles; and funding. Leo also follows headcount growth and engagement with LinkedIn posts by competitors and industry voices, which for an agency means people reacting to posts by rival agencies and voices in your niche. Ad libraries, launches, new markets, tenders and trade press are not on the list as such, so signals 4 to 7 are mostly your own research, although a job ad for a country manager does show up as hiring.
Leo builds your ideal customer profile from your own website, then checks each company's business model before it picks the right person and drafts a personal message, on LinkedIn or by email, that sounds like your agency. You approve each draft before it goes out, answering in your own words from Slack, iMessage or the portal, unless autonomous mode is on for that channel, and replies and meeting bookings are handled too. A connected HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce, Upsales or Close keeps existing clients and open deals out of outreach. No lead in Germany gets a cold message (UWG §7).
The monthly price is €89 for agencies in Europe, $99 in the US and the rest of the world and 999 SEK in Sweden, before VAT or sales tax; the first 7 days are free, nothing locks you in and you cancel in one click (pricing). Compared with an in-house SDR, and only there, our calculation supports 10x: 12 to 23 times lower cost per held meeting, assuming equal meetings.
Pick something else if your new business comes mainly from tenders and pitches, if you need ad-library monitoring, or if your targets sit mostly in Germany. Revexa started in Sweden in 2026 and has no customer results to publish yet.
Other industries: Consultants, Recruitment agencies and Software development companies.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get more clients for my marketing agency?
Narrow to one niche you can list, then contact companies in it when their marketing changes: a new CMO, a role that will not fill, funding, first ads, a launch or a new market. Ask clients for referrals after every reported win.
How do I get clients for a digital marketing agency?
Watch the free ad libraries of Meta, Google and LinkedIn for companies that just started advertising, and write with one observation about their ads. Add partner listings such as HubSpot's Solutions Directory.
How do I find clients for a new agency with no case studies?
Pick a niche where you have worked before, even in-house, and offer one small paid project, such as an audit of inherited channels, to a company that has just shown a buying signal. Turn the first result into the case study for that niche.
When should an agency contact a company's new CMO?
Within their first two months, about the plan they have announced (our advice). Winmo, which sells new-business data to agencies, wrote in 2017, about large US advertisers, that agency reviews commonly follow within six months of a new CMO; we found no newer independent study.
Is a HubSpot or Google partner badge worth it for winning clients?
It is worth it if your niche runs on that platform. HubSpot's Gold tier needs 115 sourced and 345 total points by 15 January 2027; Google Partner status needs a 70 percent optimization score, $10,000 of spend over 90 days and certified strategists.
How can an agency win new customers without cold outreach?
Work from timing instead of bought lists: referrals after reported wins, partner directories, tenders and short messages to companies that just changed marketing leader, budget or channel. See get clients without cold outreach.
